Hiking along the Danube
Pleasure hiking along the river
From Passau to Krems, the Austrian Danube region can be explored almost seamlessly on its long-distance hiking trails – the Donausteig, Welterbesteig Wachau and long-distance hiking trail Nibelungengau. In addition, there are many local and regional hiking trails and city hiking trails in Vienna. Hiking along the Danube offers distant views and panoramic scenery of one of Europe's most beautiful river landscapes, coupled with high-quality service and a wide range of places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation.
Hiking bliss by the river
The Donausteig, whose main route covers 23 stages and 450 kilometres from Passau via Linz to Grein, invites you to explore a wide variety of landscapes in the Upper Austria Danube region. For leisurely hikers, there are also 49 Donausteig circular routes branching off from the main trail.
The Wachau World Heritage Trail, with its 14 stages (180 km), showcases the diversity of this stunning World Heritage region in Lower Austria. And the connection between the two, the Nibelungengau long-distance hiking trail from Sarmingstein to Emmersdorf (main route 110 km), offers cultural hikers magnificent panoramas on 8 stages and 34 additional circular routes. The city hiking trails in Vienna run through the Vienna Woods or other local recreation areas.
