Dr. Sascha Gill, CEO of United Waterways, presents an overview of the current state of decarbonization in the European inland shipping sector against the backdrop of the "Fit for 55" initiative. Despite political turbulence, the goal of decarbonization remains intact, as demonstrated by numerous initiatives and funding programs. In particular, the Innovation Fund supports the development of innovative technologies with a record number of applications from the maritime sector. Already implemented legislation and conducted tests with hydrogen and HVO, as well as studies by the IG River Cruise on fuel options, provide important insights for the future of the industry, especially regarding fuels, infrastructure, and funding structures.
