The Jauerling Circuit

The Jauerling Circuit nicely enhances the Wachau World Heritage Trail. The pilgrimage town of Maria Laach is where a Jauerling hike begins and ends. This circuit is an attractive long-distance hiking trail going around the Jauerling-Wachau Nature Park and beyond to the high plateau in the Waldviertel.  Another 90 km can be explored in a total of seven stages. The highest mountain in the Wachau at 960 meters above sea level is also known as the “Roof of the Wachau”.

The nearby Way of St. James between Göttweig and Melk abbeys is the ideal place to go to reflect and gather new strength.

On the Way of St. James

This 44 km stage of the Way of St. James runs between the two Benedictine abbeys of Göttweig and Melk and is a highlight in terms of scenic countryside. It can be covered in about 12 hours or easily in two daily treks. Lined with a number of structures well-worth seeing, the route is charming in the way it harmoniously links the river to the adjoining countryside. The meditative exercises Paolo Coelho described in his international bestseller “The Pilgrimage” are modeled along the way from Göttweig to Melk. The next section between Melk and Persenbeug is 31 km long and can be covered in 1 to 2 days depending on pace and ambition.
