Summer in Vienna 2017

Twenty-one kilometers of sand, grass and gravel beaches, including playgrounds and BBQ areas as well as restaurants, cafés and bars make summer days on Danube Island a real experience. In 2017, the popular recreation area becomes a venue for a sporty spectacle: The FIVB Beach Volleyball World Championship sets up its nets in the specially constructed arena from 28 July to 6 August. The exciting combination of restaurant terraces, nostalgic beach pools and boat rentals defines the charm of the Old Danube. And on the urban beaches along the Danube Canal in the Old City, cool drinks are served by Strandbar Herrmann, Badeschiff, Café Bar Urania and Tel Aviv Beach. The Motto am Fluss, the café and restaurant at the mooring site of the Twin City Liner, offers the best view of the colorful hustle and bustle along the Danube Canal.

The MuseumsQuartier, an art area with important exhibition houses such as the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, once again offers a vast array of cultural events in its extensive courtyards during "Summer in the MQ". Cafés, restaurants and bars as well as the MQ Furniture, the futuristic loungers on the squares in the area, offer a superb opportunity to chill out. Fans of fashion flock to the city when MQ Vienna Fashion Week hits the catwalk in September.

With the Summer Stage and the university campus in the Old AKH, Vienna has a string of other excellent spots that are ideally suited to hanging out in the open air. Before heading out to frequent open-air clubs such as the Pratersauna and Volksgarten Pavilion or to pay a visit to one of the trendy rooftop bars with a view of Vienna. And it goes without saying in Vienna that the "Schanigärten" sidewalk seating areas in front of cafés and restaurants all over the city invite everyone to find a spot and watch the world go by.

The Music Film Festival at City Hall Square presents extraordinary film adaptations of outstanding concert and opera events from the end of June to the beginning of September - accompanied by culinary greetings from around the world at a range of food booths. Film-goers find even more open-air cinema on the Augartenspitz, in the Arena and on the roof of the Main Library on the Gürtel.

At ImPulsTanz, Europe's biggest contemporary dance festival, the international dancing elite meets from the middle of July to the middle of August for spectacular performances. The program of workshops for everyone is extremely popular. The local pop scene celebrates the summer on Karlsplatz during the Vienna Popfest at the end of July. Hot beats from techno to electro and disco are the trademark of the Vienna Summerbreak, which turns the city into a party zone at the beginning of September - with a street parade on the Ring and on City Hall Square. On the Gürtel Nightwalk at the end of August you can experience a live-live cross-section of current Viennese sounds in the venues and establishments along the Gürtel. The club festival Waves Vienna at the end of September brings a packed program of international acts to Vienna ranging from Alternative and singer-songwriters to Electronic and club music.

Vienna also serves up exciting exhibitions in the summer: The Vienna Biennale 2017 is dedicated to the topic of “Robots. Work. Our future.” at various locations. Erotic encounters are on the cards in the Lower Belvedere and the Orangery in “Klimt and Antiquity”. At the Leopold Museum, "Pictures of women" from the Leopold collection from the Biedermeier period to Modernism are on the program. And from September, the Albertina devotes its attention to the two Renaissance superstars Pieter Bruegel the Elder and Raphael. Highlights for fans of the latest contemporary art are offered from the middle of September by the gallery festival "curated by", the international art fair "viennacontemporary" as well as the sales exhibition for provocative art and installations "Parallel Vienna". www.wien.info
