Summer in Vienna

More than 50 kilometers of beach in every guise ensure that summer feeling in Vienna. Summer pools and the shoreline of Danube Island are as much a feature as the urban beaches in the Old City. Chillout areas everywhere invite people to hang out, and hip clubs to dance the night away. An evening in the open-air cinema is as much a part of Vienna's summertime lifestyle as flying visits to all manner of open-air events.

Twenty-one kilometers of sand, grass and gravel beaches, including playgrounds and BBQ areas as well as restaurants, cafés and bars make summer days on Danube Island a real experience. From the end of July, the first "Vienna Major" beach volleyball tournament will be held here as part of the international series with the same name – at which the best beach volleyball players will ensure thrilling moments. The exciting combination of restaurant terraces, nostalgic beach pools and boat rentals defines the charm of the Old Danube. And on the urban beaches along the Danube Canal in the Old City, cool drinks are served by Strandbar Herrmann, Badeschiff, Adria Wien and Tel Aviv Beach. The Motto am Fluss, the café and restaurant at the mooring site of the Twin City Liner, offers the best view of the colorful hustle and bustle along the Danube Canal.

The MuseumsQuartier, an art area with important exhibition houses such as the Leopold Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, once again offers a vast array of cultural events in its extensive courtyards during "Summer in the MQ". Cafés, restaurants and bars as well as the MQ Furniture, the futuristic loungers on the squares in the area, offer a superb opportunity to chill out. Fans of fashion flock to the city when MQ Vienna Fashion Week hits the catwalk in September.

With the Summer Stage and the university campus in the Old AKH, Vienna has a string of other excellent spots that are ideally suited to hanging out in the open air. Before heading out to frequent open-air clubs such as the Pratersauna and Volksgarten Pavilion or to pay a visit to one of the trendy rooftop bars with a view of Vienna. And it goes without saying in Vienna that the "Schanigärten" sidewalk seating areas in front of cafés and restaurants all over the city invite everyone to find a spot and watch the world go by.

The Music Film Festival at City Hall Square presents film adaptations of outstanding operas and concerts from classical and jazz to pop from the end of June to the beginning of September - accompanied by culinary greetings from around the world at a range of food booths. Film-goers find even more open-air cinema at Cinema under the Stars on Karlsplatz, on the Augartenspitz, and on the roof of the Main Library on the Gürtel.

At ImPulsTanz, Europe's biggest contemporary dance festival, the international dancing elite meets from the middle of July to the middle of August for spectacular performances. The program of workshops for everyone is extremely popular. On the Gürtel Nightwalk at the end of August you can experience a live-live cross-section of current Viennese sounds in the venues and establishments along the Gürtel.

Vienna also serves up exciting exhibitions in the summer: The Leopold Museum and many other leading museums in Vienna are dedicated to the theme for the year "Vienna 2018: Beauty and the Abyss". This focuses on the life and work of the artists Klimt, Schiele, Wagner and Moser, all of whom died in 1918. From September, the Albertina offers a cross-section through the creative work of Claude Monet and Belvedere 21 a cross-section through the creative work of Polly Apfelbaum.
