The Middle Ages along the Danube

This tour by car along the Danube lets you see the mark the Middle Ages have left on the region. The 360 km route takes you from Passau to Hainburg. Five days of travel are recommended for this route. Given the hours of the museums along the way, Saturday is the recommended day to begin the tour. The itinerary is meant as a suggestion. Please feel free to modify it to fit your personal preferences.


Recommended route

Day 1: From a bishop's see to an imperial seat of power
Splendid Passau, the City of Three Rivers, is the grand start of this tour. This stage takes you from Passau to the Schlögener Schlinge, the famous meander in the Danube, and then through the Eferding Basin to the city of Linz.

Day 3: The legendary Strudengau & the much-extolled Wachau
Starting in Grein, this stage takes you through the Strudengau to palatial Melk Abbey, then into the Wachau, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. It ends in Krems.

Day 5: From the seat of imperial power to the border of the empire
On this final stage, you explore Vienna as a medieval seat of imperial power. Then, you head through the Marchfeld to the medieval town of Hainburg.

Day 2: En route to the Strudengau
This stage starts with a discovery tour of Linz, proceeds further downstream to Enns and Mauthausen, then to the golden town of Grein, the gateway to the Strudengau.

Day 4: Through Tulln Basin to Vienna
The medieval city of Krems is where this stage starts. Then the tour proceeds to Göttweig Abbey and through the rambling plain of the Tulln Basin to the Danube metropolis of Vienna.
